Male Breast Reduction

What Is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia , or enlarged male breasts, is not something many people hear about. This is surprising considering that an estimated fifty percent of all men have some amount of excess localized fat or glandular tissue in the chest. Sometimes this can be caused by an imbalance of estrogen or testosterone levels. Some drugs such as steroids or marijuana may cause gynocomastia, as well as some hereditary conditions or diseases like tumors or endocrine disorders. Although common, many men do not know that there is a surgical procedure to correct this condition, called the male breast reduction, which is a specialty of Jay Pensler, MD, a Chicago based plastic surgeon.

What Causes Gynecomastia?

There are two types of conditions that cause a man to look as though he has feminine breasts. One is called Pseudogynecomastia, and the other is gynecomastia. Pseudogynecomastia is when a man has fat deposits on his chest that may look like breasts. This condition may be solved with diet and exercise, but in extreme cases, excess skin or fat may need to be surgically removed in a male breast reduction. The other condition is true gynecomastia, which involves enlarged breasts that usually will not be correctable with diet or exercise. In these cases, a male breast reduction can be the only solution. About sixty five percent of adolescent males experience some form of enlargement of the breast tissue. This is generally caused by fluctuations in sexual hormones. These effects usually fade over the course of a few years, as hormone levels stabilize, but in a small percentage of men, the condition lasts into adulthood. In these cases, also, a male breast reduction may be best possible choice.

Why get a Male Breast Reduction?

Many men with gynecomastia are severely embarrassed or shamed by their condition. Some men try to conceal their condition, and some may try endless hours in the gym trying to correct an issue that is simply hereditary. Although it is a common problem, many men do not know they have the option of a male breast reduction. In a procedure that can usually be completed in around two hours, in the comfort and privacy of Dr. Pensler’s surgical suite in Chicago, a male breast reduction can instantly and permanently change a patient’s appearance, and his life. If you are interested in learning more about the male breast reduction procedure, schedule a consultation with Dr. Pensler today.
